A Time for Breakthrough

Dear Friend,

I wanted to take time to write you a letter because we appreciate you. You're the best part of what we're doing here at Born To Win Ministries, because all we ever asked God to do was allow us to reach people for Him. Here you are—and we're grateful.

What I wanted to talk to you about today is breakthrough!

I recorded a teaching a while ago on how God is the God of the breakthrough, based on 2 Samuel 5:20:

“So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, ‘The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.’ Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.”

When you study the Hebrew words Baal Perazim, you see that it means "lord of the breaks." Breaking it down further, one of the root meanings of the word Baal is “master,” and Perazim comes from a root that means “breach, gap, bursting forth, breaking forth.”

So what is the Holy Spirit telling us through this passage?

Let’s read it again with those Hebrew meanings added in:

“So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, ‘The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.’ Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim [a master place of a breaking forth].”

God is not only the God of the breakthrough—He's the Master of Breaking Forth.

What does “breaking forth” mean? Let’s keep our word study going. The Oxford definition of break forth is:

“To burst out suddenly; to emerge.”

This means not only is God the God of the breakthrough, the Master of Breaking Forth—He’s also the Master of Sudden Emergence.

Now rather than go on with definition after definition, let me give you the Okie-Texan translation (since I’m a product of both regions now):

God is the God who can perform a sudden break and cause what’s needed to suddenly materialize.

We see this many times in Scripture! Let’s start with the creation of the world in Genesis 1:1–5 (NLT):

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

There was darkness that lingered around a formless, empty place—but then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. It was a sudden emergence. It suddenly materialized.

Another example is when the children of Israel were in the wilderness, and God provided quail and manna for them. In Exodus 16:4, the Lord says:

“Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you…”

And just a few verses later:

“…And the next morning the area around the camp was wet with dew. When the dew evaporated, a flaky substance as fine as frost blanketed the ground…”

And every family gathered just what they needed. There was no food—and then there was food. Six days a week, with double on the sixth. God is the God of sudden emergence!

Let’s look at one more example—this time from Luke’s Gospel, with the healing of the ten lepers (Luke 17:11–19, AMPC). They lifted up their voices and cried out to Jesus for mercy. He told them to go and show themselves to the priests, and as they went, they were cleansed.

But one of them came back to give thanks—and Jesus said something different to him:

“Your faith has restored you to health.”

The Greek word for “cleansed” is katharizō—to make clean. But the word used when Jesus speaks to the thankful leper is sozo—which means to save, heal, make whole, restore.

Mercy made them clean—but worship made him whole.

You may say, “Well, what’s the difference?” Imagine a car that’s dented and dirty. A car wash will clean the outside—but restoration repairs the dents and makes it new again.

Mercy can make something stop. Worship can reverse what’s been done.

That leper came back, and in one moment of worship, received restoration. If a leper was cleansed, they could rejoin the community—but they’d still carry the scars. But when God makes someone whole, there’s no sign they ever went through what they came out of.

So how does this tie back to the God of the Breakthrough, the God of Sudden Emergence, the God who can Materialize Anything?

Where would new skin have come from? A new nose? Hair? Lips? It could only come from the One who made them in the first place—the God who breaks forth.

This is why I love Jesus. And this is why it’s important to remember one of God’s names is El Shaddai—the One in whom there’s always enough. The One who can make whatever is needed.

Let me leave you with a testimony.

Back in 2012, we were moving into a new apartment. During that move, I tweaked my back—badly. After six weeks of no improvement, I got x-rays. They showed abnormalities. An MRI showed two discs bulged together, two more deteriorated, and constant pain in my back and legs—especially my right leg.

I went through physical therapy, which didn’t help. Medications didn’t help. Epidural injections helped a little at first but wore off. The last option was invasive back surgery—but I wasn’t going to do it. I’d seen too many people get it and end up worse off.

At that time, I wasn’t serving God. At all. I might play Christian music or pray over food, but that was it. I didn’t attend church. I didn’t read the Word. I didn’t pray.

I said out loud, “I’d rather die than get back surgery.” And I meant it.

I suffered. I was out of the workforce and became a stay-at-home dad to three kids under five. It took ten minutes to get on the floor to change a diaper, and another ten to get back up. I couldn’t sleep because of the pain. I was a dead man walking.

Fast forward to February 2015. Life had fallen apart. One night, I watched a biopic of a Christian singer I grew up listening to. It got me thinking about those old songs. I started humming one, then mouthing the words.

Then I had this thought: “What if I’m not saved?”

That shook me. I had loved God as a child. Now I wondered if I’d gone too far.

So I prayed a prayer of rededication. And immediately, the feeling of loneliness that had followed me for years left. The presence of God filled my dining room.

From that moment, everything changed. I was reading the Word for hours each day. I was listening to teachings. A hunger for God was awakened.

One night, still dealing with pain, I sat worshipping in an office chair, singing the line, “I’ll stand with arms high and heart abandoned…”

And I heard a voice say: “Don’t be a liar—stand up.”

I looked around—no one was there. Still, I sang again. The voice came louder:

“Don’t be a liar—STAND UP!”

I braced myself and stood. The pain was excruciating—the worst ever. It took two minutes to get upright.

But when I did, I felt something pour over me like warm oil—from my head, down my back, legs, to my feet.

And just like that—in a sudden emergence—all the pain was gone.

I thought I had died. Seriously. I checked myself to make sure I was still here. After years of pain—I was healed.

The next morning? No pain. The morning after that? Still none.

A week later. A month later. A year later—no pain.

It’s been 10 years—and I’ve never had that pain return.

Bone doesn’t just grow back. Cartilage doesn’t just reappear. But I know the God of the Breakthrough, the God who can suddenly materialize anything I have need of, was in that room—and showed what He could do.

So let me ask you: What are you in need of? What needs to suddenly emerge for you? What do you need for your breakthrough?

I may not know a lot—but I know God is no respecter of persons. What He did for me, He will do for you.

Ask the God of the Breakthrough to break through for you today—and I believe, just like me, your whole life can change in an instant.

Have the Best Day,

Jeromiah
